Just Like Us

By Dottie Zimmerman

Audience enthusiasm was high for the recent Main Company production, "Just Like Us". It was an allegory, in which the main focus was to live in a world with open minded peaceful means and negotiation, rather than prejudice and narrow thinking. The Village of the Blues represented the aesthetic part of life and the Village of the Greens represented the Nurturing, earth centered view of life. Into their lives came a storm that brought a young girl who helped them to learn acceptance and teamwork. The tree was the narrator and the base of reality that kept the story moving along. The actors enjoyed bringing out the crazy characters of this fantasy world, and relating it to real life issues.

Sets were minimal, but well done by Mr. Tansey and his many volunteers. The stage took on a Dr. Seuss look, and Mrs. Olson's costume designs enhanced the ideas of following the crowd very well. Lighting helped intensify the storm scene, and Mrs. Morrison's choreography gave a solid interpretation to the storm. Very few props were needed, but under the capable direction of Mrs. Ench-Welch and Erica Renzhofer, were pertinent to the action. Thanks go out to all the parents and friends who volunteered time and efforts to this production. The strike, thanks to many volunteers, was short and successful.
