Sunset Village Towers

Review by Dottie Zimmerman

With wedding bells and flowers the latest Teen Company production left the stage. Taking place in an assisted living center, this story of well intended teenagers meddling in the lives of the residents, made for an interesting and unusual story. The play encountered various characters that were fun, cantankerous, emotional and loving. Playing age roles was a very good experience for the Teen Company. They researched their material by observing at churches, retirement centers, at the mall and old folks in their families. Part of the preparation was to perfect their make up skills for aging characters. A great foil for these characters, the four teens, the “resident’s” children and the housekeeper kept our interest as they moved to resolve the conflicts and help a wonderful pair of senior couples as they moved to their lives with each other, proving romance can happen at any age.

An unusual situation, all of our tech crew were from Main company, and had not done technical work before, but worked hard to help this production achieve the success it had. Another unusual aspect was the fact that this was an original play, by our own Board President, Ann Flagg, who heretofore was hiding her authoring skills. Mr. Tansey and those who helped him did a beautiful set, graced by the generous loan of good furniture from the Rent A Center staff. This was probably the first of our plays that didn’t feature 19th century attic décor. It actually matched. Mr. Welch worked with the sound crew and Mrs. Enck-Welch organized the Prop crew. Other parents pitched in to help paint and clean. Our audiences laughed and loved as the play unfolded. Once more we were saddened to strike the set, but know that the best cure for post show blues is the next show. Join us.
